So you just got engaged… Congratulations! (Not going to lie, I’m a little jealous)
From here on out, so many people will be coming to you with advice that may or may not be helpful… So today, I’m going to give you advice that I, and my co-workers find helpful. I mean, we do work in the wedding industry…
If your dad is asking to invite his golf buddies, or your 16 year old cousin is asking to be a bridesmaid, or maybe your mom already has your “perfect venue” picked out for you, don’t say yes to anything right now. Try not to commit to anything for the first few weeks after being engaged. Try having a nonchalant answer ready to go when everyone asks you what your plans are. Use something like “We haven’t booked anything yet; we’re actually still trying to figure out exactly what we want.” Come up with something that will set the expectation, without having to commit to anything.
2. If your ring doesn’t quite fit, re-size it ASAP
I get it, I would be SO excited to show off that beautiful engagement ring, but make sure it fits. If your engagement ring is too small or too big, try to get it re-sized as soon as possible. You don’t want to take the risk of losing such a beautiful ring!
3. Don’t start inviting any guests
Some people get so excited about your engagement that they actually invite themselves to your wedding… crazy right!? Similarly, you may be so excited about the thought of wedding planning that you invite people without thinking. I don’t think you want your neighbor and his dog at your wedding because you accidentally invited them when you couldn’t contain your excitement.
4. Don’t tell your social media followers before your family
It’s really no surprise today, but newly engaged couples are almost instantaneously posting their engagement ring on Snapchat and Instagram, before they tell anyone! Before going on social media, try telling as many friends and family members in person; their facial expressions will mean so much more this way. Then, FaceTime or call any other family members and let them know the great news before posting online.
5. Don’t choose your wedding party
You may already know who you want for your bridesmaids or groomsmen, but don’t ask them just yet. There’s quite a bit to take into consideration like the kind of wedding you’ll be having, the length of your engagement, or what your budget may end up being. All of these may lead you to having to make changes to the wedding-party you have in mind at the moment. You wouldn’t want to take the risk of hurting a friendship or relationship by having to remove them from your wedding-party after asking them.
6. Don’t buy your dress
Alright, if we’re being honest, I’ve definitely looked at wedding dresses and have added them to my cart… and I’m not even engaged! So, I may not be the best person to listen to on this one, but, hear me out. It’s so important to stop and think about what you really want for your wedding, before buying the first dress you try on. It’s also been said that those who buy their wedding dresses early in their engagement, often get bored of it, or change their mind about it. So, before you start booking appointments at bridal boutiques, think about your budget, what you want for your wedding, and make sure to try on multiple styles of gowns.
7. Don’t stress
Alright, alright, I know that’s easier said than done… BUT you’re newly engaged! Enjoy the lovey-dovey feelings that come with being engaged! Your wedding can be as simple or extravagant as you want. Who knows, maybe you’ve had your wedding planned out in a Pinterest board for years like I have! 😉 Whatever your case may be, just breathe, and don’t start stressing right away.
8. Don’t forget to live it up, and be enjoy time with your partner
Like I just mentioned, LIVE IT UP. Being engaged is such a fun time; you’re both bubbly and cheery and so in love with each other. Go on dates, take a little vacation together, spend plenty of one-on-one time with each other before you dive head first into wedding planning.
There you have it! These are 8 things NOT to do when you are first engaged. During the first few weeks you are going to get so much encouragement, as well as advice. Decide which pieces of advice are important for you to remember, and which aren’t, but most importantly, remember to enjoy this special time with your partner!
