I don’t know about you but I love a good wedding dessert. I’ll be honest though, I’m not the biggest fan of cake, unless it has whipped frosting! Oh how I love a good whipped frosting. And most wedding cakes unfortunately, do not have a whipped frosting. Oh well, my life goes on.
Let’s get back on track here…
Here are some fun facts on the history of wedding cakes
*One of the first traditions began in Ancient Rome where bread (instead of cake) was broken over the bride’s head to bring good fortune to the couple and to show the groom’s dominance over his bride.
*The color of the wedding cake was typically white to symbolize purity.
*The gesture of feeding the wedding cake to each other, while entertaining for guests, was to symbolize the couple’s commitment to one another.
*The couple cut the cake together to represent their first joint task in married life.
*Looking for a groom? Old legend has it that if a single woman slept with a piece of the groom’s cake under her pillow she would dream of her future husband.
*Wedding Cake toppers became famous in the 1950’s According to an old story, a bride asked her father, a baker, to create a symbol of her love for the groom and the baker created a bride and groom cake topper.
One more just for fun…
*Queen Elizabeth ll and Prince Philip married on November 20, 1947, and according to Bridal Guide magazine, their four tiered wedding cake was nine feet tall and weighed 500 pounds. The royal couple used Prince Philip’s sword to cut the cake. Now that’s one big cake!
